How do you calculate CPM?
Divide your ad cost by the number of impressions, then multiply by 1,000. CPM stands for cost per mille, and mille is Latin for thousand. So $2,000 spent on 125,000 impressions gives a CPM of $16. Use the same date range for cost and impressions, or the result won’t mean much.
CPM = (cost ÷ impressions) × 1,000
Cost = (CPM × impressions) ÷ 1,000
Impressions = (cost ÷ CPM) × 1,000
CPM worked example
A hypothetical B2B team spends $2,000 on a LinkedIn test and gets 34,000 impressions. It wants to compare that with a channel running at a $15 CPM.
Divide cost by impressions: $2,000 ÷ 34,000 = $0.0588 per impression.
Multiply by 1,000: $0.0588 × 1,000 = a CPM of $58.82.
Work out what the same $2,000 buys at a $15 CPM: ($2,000 ÷ $15) × 1,000 = 133,333 impressions.
The LinkedIn test costs about four times as much per impression, so it has to reach buyers the cheaper channel can’t.
What is a good CPM?
A good CPM stays near your channel’s median while the ads still reach the right people. In 2026 data, ecommerce brands paid a median of about $15 on both Meta and Google Ads. B2B LinkedIn ads cost far more, with single image ads near $59. Compare within one channel and audience.
Triple Whale’s figures cover ecommerce brands on its platform, and ZenABM’s cover 211 B2B companies. Treat both as a reference point and trust your own account history first.
What does CPM stand for?
CPM stands for cost per mille, which means cost per thousand. In advertising it’s the price of 1,000 ad impressions. An impression is one time an ad is shown, so one person seeing an ad three times counts as three impressions. Most ad platforms report it as CPM or cost per 1,000 impressions.
What is the difference between CPM and CPC?
CPM prices impressions and CPC prices clicks. With CPM you pay each time an ad is shown, whether or not anyone clicks. With CPC you pay only when someone clicks. You can convert between them using your click-through rate. At a $15 CPM and a 1.5% click-through rate, each click costs $1.
What is vCPM?
vCPM is CPM counted on viewable impressions only. Google Ads lets you set the most you’ll pay for 1,000 viewable impressions, and it suits awareness campaigns far more than campaigns aimed at sales or form fills. For the same spend, a vCPM reads higher than a plain CPM, because fewer impressions count.
Why did my CPM go up?
CPM usually rises when more advertisers compete for the same audience, when your audience is narrow, or during seasonal peaks. Some of it can be the whole market. Triple Whale reports that median Meta CPM rose about 13% in a year across its ecommerce brands, so compare your rise with that first.
Does a lower CPM mean better ads?
A lower CPM means cheaper impressions, and that’s all it tells you. Cheap impressions can come from placements nobody looks at, or from audiences who will never buy. Judge CPM beside click-through rate, cost per conversion and return on ad spend before you move any budget between channels.
CPM tells you what impressions cost. If you can’t see what those impressions turned into, our analytics and tracking work connects ad spend to revenue at a fixed price.
