What does the Zapier MCP server do?
Zapier MCP lets an AI client take actions in the apps connected to your Zapier account, such as sending an email or updating a CRM record. It reaches 9,000+ apps. Zapier stores the app credentials, so your AI client never sees a third-party API key.
- Agentic mode is the default for new servers. The client gets 16 fixed meta-tools, such as
discover_zapier_actions, and the agent can add actions during a chat. - Managed mode gives one tool per action, which you set at mcp.zapier.com. The agent can't enable new actions.
- Zapier's MCP Client integration runs the other way and is in beta: a Zap calls tools on a remote MCP server.
- For a fixed, repeating job, a normal Zap may fit better. MCP vs API vs Zapier compares the routes.
Is there an official Zapier MCP server?
Yes. Zapier builds and hosts it, and its docs call it the Model Context Protocol interface to Zapier. Anthropic's directory lists the Claude connector as made by Zapier, and Zapier's zapier-mcp repository is the official plugin distribution for the hosted server.
- The workflow tools that build Next Gen Zaps need early access.
What is the Zapier MCP server URL, and how do you sign in?
The URL is https://mcp.zapier.com/api/v1/connect, and every client uses that endpoint. Most clients sign in with OAuth, and Zapier creates your default server during sign-in. Code and other clients use a connection token, which is long-lived, tied to one server, and goes in a Bearer header.
- Your client must support Streamable HTTP. Zapier doesn't support Server-Sent Events.
- Zapier says to prefer the header over a
?token=URL, because a URL is more likely to end up in a log or a committed config file. - Rotating a token cuts off every client that uses it.
- If your organization manages your AI client, an admin or owner may need to approve the connector first.
What can the Zapier MCP server read and change?
It can do what your enabled actions can do in your connected apps, so the reach depends on your setup. In agentic mode, reads run through execute_zapier_read_action and changes through execute_zapier_write_action. Both use your own app connections, and each call appears in the History tab at mcp.zapier.com.
What it can read
execute_zapier_read_actionruns read and search actions, such as HubSpot's Find Contact or Slack's Find Message.inspect_zapier_actionsandlist_zapier_connectionslist your enabled actions and app connections.list_zapier_skillsandget_zapier_skillread saved skills.
What it can change
execute_zapier_write_actionruns write actions, such as HubSpot's Update Contact or Google Sheets' Create Spreadsheet Row.enable_zapier_action,disable_zapier_actionandauto_provision_mcpchange which actions the server holds.create_zapier_skill,update_zapier_skillanddelete_zapier_skillchange saved skills.- With early access,
create_workflow,enable_workflowanddelete_workflowchange Next Gen Zaps. - Some servers also get
write_code_action, which creates a custom code action when no built-in action matches. Zapier is rolling it out gradually.
How do you set up Zapier MCP in Claude, ChatGPT and Cursor?
Zapier documents all three, plus Claude Code, Codex and other clients in its quickstart. Claude uses the listed Zapier connector, ChatGPT a custom server with Zapier's URL, and Cursor a plugin. You don't need to create a server at mcp.zapier.com first, because Zapier creates your default server when you sign in.
Claude
Zapier documents its listed Claude connector, which it says works on all Claude plans, including Free. On Team and Enterprise, an Owner or Primary Owner enables it in Organization settings first.
- In a chat, ask Claude to connect to Zapier MCP, then click Connect on the Zapier card.
- Click Copy prompt, then Continue. Keep the copied setup prompt.
- Review the access, choose your Zapier account if asked, and click Allow.
- Back in Claude, paste the prompt to finish setup.
ChatGPT
Zapier documents a custom MCP server in ChatGPT on Plus or Pro. If your Business, Enterprise or Edu workspace already has Zapier, install it from your organization's tab under Plugins and sign in.
- In ChatGPT, click Plugins in the sidebar, click Add, then select Create custom MCP server.
- Name it
Zapier MCPand enterhttps://mcp.zapier.com/api/v1/connectas the connection. - Leave authentication on OAuth, tick I understand and want to continue and click Create as a plugin.
- Click Continue to Zapier MCP and sign in to Zapier.
Cursor
Zapier documents a Cursor plugin. Update Cursor first, because Zapier says some earlier versions have an OAuth issue. If your team already distributed the plugin, open an Agent chat and sign in when prompted.
- Copy the setup prompt from Zapier's Cursor guide.
- Install the Zapier plugin from the Cursor Marketplace.
- Open a new Agent chat, paste the prompt and sign in to Zapier when prompted.
What can you ask the Zapier MCP server?
Good first prompts read one app and change nothing. Each successful call still uses two tasks. These examples assume HubSpot, Google Sheets and Slack are connected, and they fit the HubSpot, Google Sheets and Slack actions Zapier lists. Ask the assistant to show each write first.
Reads
Find the HubSpot contact for jane@example.com and tell me their owner and lifecycle stage. Don't change anything.
Reads
Read the Q4 campaigns tab in our budget Google Sheet and list every row with no owner.
Reads
Find Slack messages from the last 7 days in #campaign-launches that mention a broken link. Give me a link to each one.
Writes
Add one row to our campaign tracker sheet for the November webinar. Show me the row before you add it.
Writes
Update the HubSpot contact jane@example.com so the lead status is Qualified. Show me the change before you make it.
What are the limits of the Zapier MCP server?
Zapier's only cap is your plan's task allowance, so tool calls per session and tools per server are unlimited. Repeated actions add up: five spreadsheet rows count as five calls and ten tasks. Without pay-per-task billing, calls stop until your billing cycle resets, and blocked calls return an error.
- With pay-per-task on, calls keep working up to a usage cap, and Zapier's pricing page sets that pause at 3× your task subscription.
- Successful test calls use tasks too.
- Sharing a server needs Team or Enterprise, and people you share with can't connect their own client to it. A tool bundle works on any plan.
- Zapier stores customer data in AWS US-East 1, and says Enterprise customers are opted out of AI model training by default.
- Email and Slack text can come from outsiders, so keep tools that read it out of chats that can also send or change data.
How much does Zapier MCP cost?
Zapier MCP has no separate billing and comes with every plan. Free includes 100 tasks a month, Pro starts at $19.99 a month billed annually for 750 tasks, and Team at $69 for 2,000. At two tasks a call, that's 50, 375 or 1,000 successful calls, if nothing else uses tasks.
- Billed monthly, Pro starts at $29.99 and Team at $103.50. Enterprise pricing is custom.
- Free has no pay-per-task option, so usage stops at 100 tasks until the next cycle. It gives basic access to MCP and two-step Zaps.
- MCP draws on the same task allowance as your Zaps. A Zap action uses one task, so one action costs double through MCP.
- On paid plans, pay-per-task bills extra tasks at 2.5× the base rate on monthly plans and 1.25× on annual plans.
- From 1 December 2026, tool calls to free By Zapier apps such as Zapier Tables don't use tasks, and AI by Zapier calls use AI by Zapier's own price.
What are the alternatives to Zapier MCP?
The main alternatives are a regular Zap, another automation server, or the app's own MCP server. MCP vs API vs Zapier shows when a fixed Zap beats an assistant. n8n runs on an instance you can host yourself. If one app is all you need, its vendor's server skips the task count.
- A regular Zap: Fixed, repeating jobs at one task per action.
- n8n MCP: Workflows on an instance you can host yourself.
- Workato MCP: Prebuilt app servers and servers built from your recipes.
- HubSpot MCP: HubSpot's own server, if it's the only app you need.
Which skill goes with Zapier MCP?
Use the free Agent write safety skill before you enable write actions, because one Zapier connection can reach email, CRM and chat apps at once. Use the Marketing context kit to write down your naming rules and definitions once, so every prompt starts from the same rules and the assistant has less to guess.
- Agent write safety: Sets approvals before an agent can send messages or change records.
- Marketing context kit: Holds your naming rules and definitions in one folder for every prompt.
We set up Claude Code and MCP for marketing teams, with access scoped per person and approval before anything changes.
