What does the Stripe MCP server do?
The Stripe MCP server gives an AI agent tools for the Stripe API and Stripe's knowledge base. stripe_api_read and stripe_api_write reach customers, subscriptions, coupons, promotion codes, payment links and invoices. stripe_analytics, in preview, queries metrics and builds SQL from plain language. Treasury tools can send money, with human confirmation.
stripe_api_searchandstripe_api_detailsfind API methods and their parameters before a read or write.- Stripe's analysis guide covers business questions, such as how new promotions affected revenue this quarter.
Is there an official Stripe MCP server?
Yes. Stripe hosts it, and its docs call it the Stripe Model Context Protocol server. Anthropic's directory lists the connector as made by Stripe. The older local package, @stripe/mcp, is deprecated and gets no further updates, including security fixes, so connect to the hosted server.
- The
@stripe/agent-toolkitpackage is deprecated too. - Treasury tools are in public preview, and
stripe_analyticsis in preview.
What is the Stripe MCP server URL, and how do you sign in?
The URL is https://mcp.stripe.com. Stripe says to use OAuth for interactive clients, which lets you authorize and revoke a client without sharing a key. You can set different permissions for each live account or sandbox. Autonomous clients that can't use OAuth send an agent API key as a bearer token.
- A restricted key sets Read, Write or None per resource, and every permission defaults to None. Write includes Read.
- An agent key is a restricted key tagged for agent access. Its permissions work the same, and it automatically falls under approval rules.
- From December, secret keys and untagged restricted keys get a
401on MCP. Replace them with new agent keys or OAuth by 30 November 2026. - Admins can turn MCP on or off for the team, separately for live mode and sandboxes.
- OAuth doesn't work for connected accounts. Use a platform agent key and the
Stripe-Accountheader.
What can the Stripe MCP server read and change?
It can read and change much of the Stripe API, within your OAuth permissions or your key. stripe_api_write covers POST, PATCH, PUT and DELETE methods, including coupons, subscriptions and refunds. A restricted key can only do what you allow, and a missing permission returns an error.
What it can read
- Customers, charges, subscriptions, invoices and payment links, through
stripe_api_read. - Coupons, promotion codes, products and prices.
- Disputes, refunds, payouts and balance transactions.
stripe_analyticsfor metrics, subscription analysis and reports, with Data read permissions.
What it can change
- Customers, coupons, promotion codes, products, prices and payment links, through
stripe_api_write. - Subscriptions (create, update, cancel) and invoices (create, finalize, void).
- Refunds, with human confirmation.
- Treasury, in public preview:
send_money,transfer_moneyandconvert_currency, with human confirmation.
How do you set up the Stripe MCP server in Claude, ChatGPT and Cursor?
Stripe documents all three, plus Claude Code, Codex and VS Code. Claude has a listed connector, ChatGPT has a listed plugin, and Cursor takes a plugin or a config entry. Stripe's shortcut is stripe agent setup, which detects your agents. Grant a sandbox first, then add live mode.
Claude
Stripe documents its listed connector on the web and in Claude Desktop. On Team and Enterprise, an owner adds it to the workspace first.
- Open the Stripe connector and add it to your account or workspace.
- Sign in to Stripe and grant permissions in the OAuth window.
- In a conversation, select the plus icon, select Connectors and enable Stripe.
ChatGPT
Stripe links an official plugin in ChatGPT. The ChatGPT desktop app shares its MCP setup with Codex.
- Open the plugin link in Stripe's MCP docs and install it.
- Connect your Stripe account and grant permissions in the OAuth window.
Cursor
Stripe's recommended route is /add-plugin stripe in Cursor chat. To set it up by hand, add this to ~/.cursor/mcp.json. Stripe's docs also have an Install in Cursor button.

}What can you ask the Stripe MCP server?
Good first prompts read revenue or promotion data for one date range. These examples use stripe_analytics and the API methods Stripe lists. Analytics needs read permissions only. The write prompts change your account, so run them in a sandbox first and ask to see the values before anything is created.
Reads
What effect did this quarter's promotions have on revenue?
Reads
Show monthly recurring revenue for each of the last 12 months.
Reads
List active promotion codes with how many times each has been redeemed and its redemption limit.
Writes
Create a 20% off coupon and a promotion code called SPRING20. Show me the values before you create them.
Writes
Create a payment link for our annual plan price. Show me the price and settings before you create it.
What are the limits of the Stripe MCP server?
Stripe hasn't published a limit for MCP calls. Its API rate limits are 100 requests a second in live mode and 25 in a sandbox, per account. Some actions need human confirmation in the Dashboard, and an unapproved request expires after 24 hours. After you approve, you tell the agent to retry.
stripe_api_writegroups many actions, so confirmation depends on the action. It's separate from your client's tool-approval setting.- Agent keys get default approval rules for refunds, subscription cancellations, payouts, outbound money movement and currency conversion. You can change or delete those rules.
- Stripe tells you to turn on your client's tool approval and take care alongside other servers, because of prompt injection.
- Stripe's read API allocation averages 500 read requests per transaction over 30 days, with a minimum of 10,000 a month.
- Workbench logs MCP tool calls, which you can filter by date, status, tool or client.
How much does the Stripe MCP server cost?
Stripe hasn't published a price for the MCP server. A Stripe account has no setup or monthly fees, and you pay per transaction: 2.9% + 30¢ on domestic cards on the standard US plan. Queries API use is free through 31 January 2027, with usage-based pricing from 1 February 2027.
stripe_analyticscalls the Queries API for SQL, so check that date if you run analytics through MCP.- Card rates vary by country, so check Stripe's pricing page for yours.
What are the alternatives to the Stripe MCP server?
The main alternatives are a warehouse server, an automation bridge, or a prebuilt billing server. If Stripe data lands in a warehouse, Snowflake MCP answers revenue questions with no live payment access. Zapier lists Stripe actions such as Find Customer. Workato lists a prebuilt Stripe Billing Operations server.
- Snowflake MCP: Revenue reporting, if Stripe data lands in your warehouse.
- Zapier MCP: Stripe actions through one Zapier connection.
- Workato MCP: A prebuilt Stripe Billing Operations server.
- Shopify MCP: Orders and products, if you sell through Shopify.
Which skill goes with the Stripe MCP server?
Use the free Agent write safety skill before you grant write access, because this server can change subscriptions, coupons and refunds. Use Purchase reconciliation when analytics purchases and Stripe payments disagree, because it compares them order by order, never total against total, and shows where the gap sits.
- Agent write safety: Sets approvals before an agent can change billing or issue refunds.
- Purchase reconciliation: Checks analytics purchases against billing records one order at a time.
We set up Claude Code and MCP for marketing teams, with access scoped per person and approval before anything changes.
