What does a Semrush MCP server do?
The server gives an AI assistant live Semrush data in chat. Semrush says you can query keyword rankings and traffic breakdowns, audit domains, monitor competitors and track paid search. Its docs cover SEO API data, Trends API data by subscription, and read-only methods from the Projects API.
- Semrush also publishes a prompt library and skills. The skills tell an agent which tools to call and in what order.
Is there an official Semrush MCP server?
Yes. Semrush publishes and documents it on its developer site, and its knowledge base calls it an official app in ChatGPT, Claude, Microsoft Copilot and Perplexity. Claude's directory lists Semrush Holdings, Inc. as the maker and marks it Anthropic verified.
What is the Semrush MCP server URL, and how do you sign in?
The URL is https://mcp.semrush.com/v2/mcp, and it uses streamable HTTP only. OAuth is the default: your client redirects you to the Semrush login. Clients without OAuth can send an Authorization: Apikey YOUR_API_KEY header. Claude's listed app uses its own URL, https://mcp.semrush.com/claude/v1/mcp.
- Claude Enterprise can use enterprise-managed authorization, which the corporate account owner sets up with a trusted issuer.
- For an agent Semrush doesn't list, Semrush says to contact its support team, which reviews requests one at a time.
What can a Semrush MCP server read and change?
It reads, and Semrush says assistants can't modify or delete data. What you can read depends on your plan. SEO data comes with the listed plans, and traffic and market data need a Trends API plan. Projects access is read-only, and Semrush doesn't support Projects API write actions.

How do you set up a Semrush MCP server in Claude, ChatGPT and Cursor?
Semrush documents all three. Claude and ChatGPT use its official app, so you don't paste a URL. Cursor takes the URL in its MCP settings. Semrush's setup guide also covers Claude Code, VS Code and Microsoft Copilot. You need an eligible plan first, and OAuth sends you to the Semrush login.
Claude
Semrush has an official app in Claude, and its guide gives these steps.
- Open Claude and go to Customize, then Connect your apps.
- Search for Semrush, select the app and click Connect.
- Review the access details and click Approve.
- Tag @Semrush in a chat.
ChatGPT
Semrush has an official app in ChatGPT, so you don't add a custom server.
- Go to Account, Settings, then Apps.
- Find and select Semrush, click Connect, then Continue.
- Review the access details and click Approve.
- Tag @Semrush in a chat.
Cursor
Semrush documents Cursor: in Cursor Settings, open Tools & MCP and add this config. The same entry works in ~/.cursor/mcp.json.

"semrush": {
"url": "https://mcp.semrush.com/v2/mcp"

}What can you ask a Semrush MCP server?
Good first prompts name a domain, a country database and a row limit, because every query consumes API units. These examples fit the tools Semrush lists. All five read, and each one spends units, so the row limit controls the cost. The domains are examples, and the last prompt needs a Trends API plan.

What are the limits of a Semrush MCP server?
Usage follows Semrush's API unit system. The listed plans include 50,000 units, which refresh on your renewal date. A Domain Organic Search Keywords report costs 10 units a line, so 50,000 units buys about 5,000 lines. Semrush hasn't published a separate MCP rate limit.
- Historical data costs more: 50 units a line on that same report.
- Semrush's API help page says unused units expire at renewal.
- SEO Classic Business and Semrush One Advanced need an API units package, sold in 2, 5, 10 or 20 million units.
- Trends API data needs a Basic or Premium Trends API plan. Check your plan under My Profile, Subscription info.
How much does a Semrush MCP server cost?
Semrush says there are no additional MCP usage fees, and its MCP page says the service isn't free. You pay for an eligible plan. Semrush One Starter lists at $199 a month, or $165.17 a month billed annually, and Pro+ at $299, or $248.17. MCP draws on those plans' API units.
- Eligible plans are Semrush One Starter and Pro+, and SEO Classic Pro and Guru. SEO Classic Business and Semrush One Advanced qualify with an API units package.
- Semrush offers a seven-day free trial.
- Semrush's API help page shows unit package sizes and no package prices.
What are the alternatives to a Semrush MCP server?
The closest rival is Ahrefs MCP, which also covers keywords and backlinks and returns Search Console data. DataForSEO has its own server, with a pay-as-you-go model. If you need your own click and query data, the Search Console guide covers the routes that work.
- Ahrefs MCP: Keywords, backlinks and Search Console data on one server.
- DataForSEO MCP: SERP, keyword and backlink data from DataForSEO's own server.
- Google Search Console MCP: Routes to your own click and query data.
Which skill goes with a Semrush MCP server?
Use the free Marketing context kit to write down your domains, target markets and naming rules once, so every prompt starts from the same databases and competitors. This server only reads, so the main cost of a loose prompt is spent API units, and written rules keep requests narrow.
- Marketing context kit: Holds your domains, markets and definitions in one folder for every prompt.
We set up Claude Code and MCP for marketing teams, with access scoped per person and approval before anything changes.
