Microsoft Clarity MCP

Microsoft publishes an official Clarity MCP server that runs on your machine through npx with a Clarity Data Export token. Its three tools read dashboard metrics, session recording lists and Clarity's docs, and none of them changes anything. Each project gets 10 API requests a day, so keep it to targeted questions.

What does a Microsoft Clarity MCP server do?

The server lets an AI assistant query Clarity in plain language. Microsoft says you can filter by browser, operating system, country or device, and pull metrics such as scroll depth, engagement time and traffic. The GitHub README adds a tool for session recordings and one for Clarity's documentation.

Is there an official Microsoft Clarity MCP server?

Yes. Microsoft publishes it as microsoft/clarity-mcp-server under the MIT licence, documents it on Microsoft Learn and lists it in its catalog of official MCP servers. Claude's directory shows it as made by Microsoft. It's a local server, and Microsoft hasn't published a hosted URL.

What is the Microsoft Clarity MCP server URL, and how do you sign in?

It has no server URL, because it runs locally with npx @microsoft/clarity-mcp-server. You sign in with a Data Export API token. In your Clarity project, go to Settings, Data Export, then Generate new API token. Pass it on the command line or as a tool parameter. Only project admins can manage tokens.

What can a Microsoft Clarity MCP server read and change?

It reads, and it has no write tools. query-analytics-dashboard fetches dashboard metrics, list-session-recordings lists recordings by filter, and query-documentation-resources returns documentation snippets. Recording results carry session links, duration and interaction timelines, which helps you pick which sessions to watch in Clarity.

How do you set up a Microsoft Clarity MCP server in Claude, ChatGPT and Cursor?

Generate a Data Export token first. Microsoft documents Claude for Desktop and VS Code, and its launch post names Cursor. Microsoft names no ChatGPT steps, and because the server is local, ChatGPT reaches it only through OpenAI's Secure MCP Tunnel. Local servers don't work in Claude on the web.

Claude

Microsoft has a listed extension for Claude Desktop. You can also add it by hand to claude_desktop_config.json, using the entry below.

  1. In Claude Desktop, go to File, Settings, Extensions.
  2. Search for Microsoft Clarity and click Install.
  3. Enter your Data Export API token.

    "@microsoft/clarity-mcp-server": {
      "command": "npx",
      "args": [
        "@microsoft/clarity-mcp-server",
        "--clarity_api_token=your-api-token-here"
      ]
    }
  }
}

ChatGPT

Microsoft names no ChatGPT steps. A local server reaches ChatGPT only through OpenAI's Secure MCP Tunnel, so you'd run the server yourself and expose it that way. OpenAI's custom server guide covers the connection form.

Cursor

Microsoft's launch post names Cursor, and its client config uses the standard local format. Add this to ~/.cursor/mcp.json.

        "--clarity_api_token=your-api-token-here"
      ]
    }
  }
}

What can you ask a Microsoft Clarity MCP server?

Keep each prompt to one question and one time range, because each project gets 10 requests a day and the tools expect a single task. The first two examples come from Microsoft's docs. All four read, so the only thing they spend is your daily quota.

  • Reads

    Fetch scroll depth for the past 2 days filtered by device type.

  • Reads

    Give me traffic and engagement time segmented by browser.

  • Reads

    List 20 session recordings from the last 7 days on mobile for our pricing page. Give me the session links.

  • Reads

    Using Clarity's documentation, show me how to create a smart event.

What are the limits of a Microsoft Clarity MCP server?

Microsoft's limit is 10 API requests per project per day, with at most 3 days of data and 3 dimensions per request. On the Data Export API, a response stops at 1,000 rows with no pagination, and going over the daily limit returns a 429 error. Microsoft lists higher limits as planned.

How much does a Microsoft Clarity MCP server cost?

It's free. Microsoft says Clarity is a free service forever, with no traffic limits and no paid version to upgrade to, and the server code is MIT-licensed. Your only other cost is the AI client, since Claude, Cursor and VS Code plans are billed by their own vendors.

What are the alternatives to a Microsoft Clarity MCP server?

The Data Export API gives you similar numbers in a script, with the same 10 requests a day. For deeper session or product questions, use a server from a tool you already run, such as Fullstory or PostHog. GA4 suits traffic reporting beyond Clarity's 3-day window.

Which skill goes with a Microsoft Clarity MCP server?

Use the free Analytics tool selector to decide which questions Clarity should answer and which belong in GA4 or a product analytics tool. Use the Marketing context kit to keep your page names, metric definitions and tracking notes in one folder, so a small daily quota goes on the right questions.
